Great post !! I instruct saltwater anglers here in north east Florida, and stress the importance on “translation” during the casting stroke. I will definitely focus on elbow movement in future lessons. That is another useful tool to use to have the rod tip to travel in a straight line path.

(Former golf coach/instructor here). Has anyone hooked up an expert fly caster to a 3d motion measurement system to see what the body is actually doing during the casting motion?

Yes, they have. The results I've seen have been interesting in a biomechanical way, but perhaps not that useful for direct instruction.
